A Bit of Organizing, A Decision, and a Pottery Barn Crush

Friday, January 7, 2011

Woo woo, it's Friday!!! Alex and I just got back from a romantic dinner date at the new A&W. He got the onion rings. I got the fries. Then we gazed into eachother's eyes over our rootbeers. It was dreamy. ;)

A Bit of Organizing

With the New Year and all, I've spent the last week or so getting a bit organized. First, I dropped off a trunkful of boxes to our local thrift shop. They were sitting in my trunk for weeks! (Plus, I had nowhere to hide any new purchases so I had to get rid of them asap. Hahaha, I kid, I kid.) I did end up buying a shiny, new calendar from Chapters. It was 50% off and it has sparkles. I haven't had a calendar in the house for years. I am so going to remember people's birthdays and stuff this year. Not like Alex's last birthday when I went off to work and forgot it was his birthday until I was writing the date on my chalkboard at school. I hurt his feelings. :( Not anymore. I am totally going to be ahead of the game this time. I also cleared out the closet in the breakfast room. Behind our crisp, new closet door were shelves and shelves full of teacher-y stuff. Binders, books, stickers, gluesticks, bristol board, you name it. I sorted through everything, recycled what I didn't need, and packed the rest in boxes to bring to my classroom. I've still got a ways to go but it's a start, right?

A Decision

I want to say ♥ thank you ♥ to those of you who took the time to answer my dorky poll or to leave a comment with some advice for me about my light fixture dilemma. So many of your comments made perfect sense! Deep down I really do want something a bit more old-fashioned looking. Al and I came to a mutual decision that we are going to keep the white, drum-shade pendant light in the breakfast room until we find the light we really want. Then, we'll just put the white one in the laundry room downstairs for a crisp, clean look. It was only $39 so it ends up being win-win. We have a cute light for now, until we find the perfect one for the space. I forgot to tell you that the light is adjustable, so we can mount it close to the ceiling if we want. We'll see how that turns out.

Unrelated sidenote: Did you know that our laundry room is being demolished as we speak?!? I told Alex I wanted to put crown moulding in the living room and dining room. He said not right now and then went downstairs and knocked down a wall in the laundry room. What!?!?!?!?! No pancakes for him tomorrow.

It was already pretty hideous, what's a pile of wood and some drywall dust?
A Crush

I have a really hard time finding and choosing fabrics: bedding, curtains, pillows, etc. I love certain pale shades of blue and green that aren't really "in" right now. I haven't been able to find bedding that I absolutely love for a few years. Until yesterday. I need to lay off the Pottery Barn website. I'm crushing on their new:

Nila Patchwork Quilt - Pottery Barn

Vintage Ticking Stripe Duvet - Pottery Barn

Embroidered Vintage Ticking Stripe Pillow - Pottery Barn

My Dream Bed - Pottery Barn

Alright, I'm off to make some tea and eat the last of the Christmas goodies. Hope you have a great weekend!

  2. I'm the first to comment...I feel like your blog stalker...Lol! I think you made a good decision on the light. I think if you kept it in the breakfast room, you probably would have never been completely happy with it! Think it would be cute as a laundry room fixture! I am also digging that pottery barn bedding...very cute!

  4. I love Pottery Barn too... love the bedding you picked out except my dogs would have it looking, well shabby in just a day or two. I bought new bedding from Pottery Barn before Christmas and chose the Vanessa (?? I think) duvet. It's a pretty robin's egg/aquaish background with enough floral to hide doggy dirt. Plus it's a fairly heavyweight linenish fabric.

Good luck with laundry room. Your husband sound like mine. I once came home to all of our stairs being gone....

  9. Good choice on what to do with the lovely new light. I didn't comment on that because I had no idea what to say. When I have something particular in mind that I really want, I usually have to settle for less, because I just can't find it in Canada. Our selection is so poor, but how about on line? Have you checked out some of the lighting places that people buy from?
I really hope you find exactly what you're looking for. And about the laundry room, whose plan was that? I wish my hubby would figure out what to do about my laundry room.
I love the quilt and shams from PB! They are very nice!
    Great post!

  14. Hi Sarah! I think you made the right decision concerning the new light fixture. You were never going to love it there. And every time you saw it, you may have thought "it's okay, but I really wanted something else".
Getting a new calendar at the beginning of the year is something I look forward to every year! I just love choosing a new calendar, having a year's worth of new pictures to look at, and a fresh calendar with no scribbles all over it! :)
I LOVE that Pottery Barn bedding!! The quilt is beautiful! And I love the ticking stripe sheets. And that pillow?!! I love it all! I have got to get me some new bedding!
Hope you have a wonderful day.
    Beth.

  16. Ah! That PB bedding! I spotted it just after Christmas, and tried to convince hubby that we need to redo our entire bedroom in grays and greens so it would work. He seemed less than pleased, considering we just painted this past fall.
