Pendant Light Poll - Yay or Nay?

Yay or nay?

{Skip right to the end of this post to answer the poll if you don't feel like reading my nattering or scrolling through a thousand pictures.}

I've got a light fixture dilemma. You're smart. Maybe you can help!

As you probably already know I've been looking and looking for a light fixture for our breakfast room. I kept imagining an old-fashioned pendant light kind of like this (but the 10" one not the 8" one that's pictured):

I looked at a few small, dainty lights like these:

I looked at some drum shades like this:

And this:

I looked at some funky lights like this:

And this:

But they are all just sooooo much money ( + shipping, handling, and duties). So far I've held off on purchasing one.

Until a few days ago. When I wandered into the lighting aisle at Home Depot and saw a cute, white, drum shade pendant light that was only.......

$39.99

What?!? Most of the lights I was looking at online were $139.99 or more.

Pros: Cute, white, & cheap.

Cons: Chrome finish, it's not really old-fashioned looking like I was picturing.

Oh, did you want to see it in the room? Okay. Alex installed it just to see if we like it and want to keep it.

{Please remember that the room is still in progress. That creamy table will be getting a fresh coat of white very soon. Those chairs will also be recovered once I find the perfect fabric.}

Well?

Chrome.

So, I need to decide if I should keep the light as is, spraypaint the chrome hardware, or return it and keep searching for a different fixture altogether. What do you think?

  1. This is my crazy mind but I feel like the lamp hangs a little too low.. I love it so much, but it just feels awkward with it that low.

  2. I didn't want to just vote without commenting....if you wouldn't have pointed out that it was chrome....I wouldn't have noticed it. You can always add some shiney objects in the room....or paint it like you suggested =)

I LOVE it though ~ so cute.

  3. Love it, looks great above your table!

  4. I said paint is nickel but I totally agree with Rennie. A few shiny things around the room might be just what it needs.

  5. I really like the fixture, but think it looks a little too modern with the rest of your stuff. Which, is fine if you want to mix it up, but I am not sure if you do . . . since you have a poll (hehe).

  6. Hmmm. I didn't like it in the first picture by itself, but then I liked it once I saw it with the window shade behind & the table. I am of no help, really.

  7. I think the light looks nice, but don't love the chrome either. Painting could always be a {cheap} option. Have you checked Overstock? I just bought this light: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Indoor-4-light-Antique-Copper-Chandelier/4127717/product.html a few months ago for our toy room/formal dining room and I LOVE it! It's not quite as coppery as I feared, as I was thinking I would maybe have to spray it. It's much more black. Not quite sure how big your table is and maybe you are looking for something smaller...

  8. I'm totally one to always try and convince myself that I like something rather than hold off and keep looking, but I think if you were wanting something a little more old-fashioned, this might always bug you in the back of your mind. If not though, it does work in the room just fine I think. It looks really cool when it's lit up too!

  9. well if your already questioning your pick i would say your not totally happy.....i think it looks nice and i didn't notice the crome till you picked it out( that can be painted) have you checked CSN out i got a chandy there for less then 55.00 was a prize i won but i have oddles of light fixtures picked out for my future bathroom re-do....well anyways go with your heart

  10. at first i thought ... no ... but then once i saw it in your space, i loved it!

i honestly don't think it needs spray painted. my thought with some metal spray paints is that they don't always look right... or 'natural.'

plus i love the little sparkle the current finish gives.

just my thoughts :) i'll be excited to see what you do.

  11. I think the height works fine. Any higher and it would shine in your eyes when seated. Painting the post either white or brushed nickel would work well. I believe the sheerness of the shade and the pattern softens the moderness of it. I've been looking for something just like this for above my working table in my craft room. Even if you don't like it in the future, you haven't broken the bank. I think it looks great lit up too!

  12. Hi Sarah! I totally agree with Courtenay. I have plenty of light fixtures around our house that I "settled for" because I didn't want to spend the money on something that I really want. Now I am in the process of replacing light fixtures that are only a couple years old with the fixtures that cost more money, but are the ones I really want. So, if you really, REALLY want one of the other fixtures, I would recommend taking that one back and saving the money for the more expensive fixtures, because you will probably end up getting them in the future anyways.
But that being said, I really kind of like the new fixture. It's pretty. :)
Hope you have a great day!
    Beth.

  13. I love it!!! I say keep it and just paint the fixtures if you want. I just bought a floor lamp from Home Depot and just love it! I can't believe the selection they have there!

  15. Delurking to say: It's really cute, but I think it's too modern for your space.

If you would be willing to share it, do you have a link to your adoption blog? I know you've mentioned it a few times, and I suspect that I may find myself in a similar situation if 2011 does not pan out the way I'm hoping.

I really do like the new header, btw. Thank you for sharing your projects.

  16. I think its really pretty...especially when it is lit! My vote is to keep it, but to spray paint it nickel to get more of the look you are going for!

  17. If you are unsure, return it, and get something you absolutely love. You have a lot of white in the room, I might go with something rustic. Of course cost is always a consideration though...

  18. IF you are putting it up to a POLL you don't really like it. Others opinions shouldn't matter.... listen to your GUT. IF you loved it you would have revealed your NEW CUTE light.... instead you did a poll to try and convince yourself it is right..... I say my opinion is USELESS go with your gut and your gut is CLEARLY saying NO.

  19. Sadie,

The colour on the walls in our breakfast room is called Seagrass. It's made by Para Paints which is now carried at Lowes.

    Suz,

The link to my adoption blog is:

    www.roaryneedsafriend.blogspot.com

Although our adoption is at a standstill so I haven't posted much on it lately. :(

    Thanks for de-lurking! :)

  21. I think it looks great. Who's going to even look at the ceiling to see the chrome. Life's too short to be so picky about such inane details. Let it go and enjoy your life.

  22. It really does look pretty when its lit. But I don't think you should keep it if it's not what you want. It will bug you. Have you seen this one at homedepot.com?

  25. Rachelle,

Thank you for leaving your comments. Unfortunately I already recycled the box and the packaging... but the name of the light was either Hampton Bay or Hampton House. They had a matching floor lamp, too. I also tried to find it on the Home Depot website and couldn't find it.....? Strange. Hope that helps!!
