A New-Door-Paint-Colour-Dilemma

Wednesday, October 7, 2015

Remember how we bought a Fixer Upper a few years ago? Remember how we replaced both exterior doors with new craftsman-style ones from Home Depot? Well, this summer we finally got around to choosing a paint colour for them. (They came pre-primed in white and it was time they got painted!) I ended up choosing a charcoal colour from Benjamin Moore.

{I'll update this post with the name of it once I dig the can out of the basement.}

My father-in-law did all the work and painted them one afternoon. I LOVE how they turned out. They look so pretty against the lighter grey siding. Here's a quick snapshop I took with my iPhone the other day:

So, here is my dilemma. We just installed the same style of door in the side entry at our house. I love how crisp and clean the white door / white siding looks right now. However, a white door is just not practical with a toddler, a baby, and two large dogs.

Should I stick with my usual impractical decision-making and paint it white - knowing that it will forever be dirty and need 1001 touch-ups. Or, do I paint it charcoal with the leftover paint from The Fixer Upper?!?!?!

HELP! I need to make a decision today since the weather over the next few days might be warm enough to paint. Soon it's going to get all bleak, rainy, gloomy, and, you know, freezing.

So if you're reading this post (is there anybody out theeeeeeeeeere?!?!?) can you help me out by sharing your two cents.... white or charcoal?

Thanks a billion.

Oh, and if you came here for pictures of the kiddos, here are just a few random pictures from our boring (but lovely) everyday life.

Winnie chillin' in her jumperoo.
Coops painting a rainbow on a dreary and rainy fall day.

Oh, and just because our lives seemed like they couldn't get any crazier, they did. We just bought our very own lakefront cottage. More details to come!

:)

  3. I say paint it charcoal! We have a white exterior door and only one dog (no kids) and I'm constantly having to clean it. I love how the charcoal pops & looks with your siding. I'm thinking about painting ours the same color you picked now. I can't wait to find out what specific color it is. Omg.....could the kids get any cuter? They're getting so big!

  4. Nice to hear from you :). I would definitely go for Charcoal.

  5. I vote for Charcoal. It will show off the details of the door rather than blend in to the white siding.

  6. I really need to know the name of that color. We have a door color dilemma on our hands too. I went with a lighter shade and its just not right. ugg

  7. The charcoal is a great looking color! I think you'll find that it shows dust a lot faster than the white does. So, you have to choose whether to occasionally give everything a good swipe with a Mr. Clean Eraser, or hose down the door. Either will look great. Your dilemma is which type of cleaning sounds best. :)

    Cute kiddos!

  9. Do the charcoal. We have a side door to our garage and I painted it green when we did our #outdoorredo. We then decided to replace the door with an extra door we liked better from part of the reno. Now the door needs to be painted. White or green? I am probably going to go with green again. It is to the garage, will get dirty, and gives it a little punch ass we see it every time we park. It will also end up being a main entry to our lower level once we get the garage redone as well.

  11. I'm sticking with the everyone else on this, charcoal! It would look great! The kiddo pictures are too sweet for words. And I must admit I am very jealous of the lakefront cottage purchase!! Lucky you. Think of all the Homesense trips this will require to furnish and decorate!! So so jealous :)

  14. I vote charcoal. We are doing ours mint. I love the doors to pop. The exception for me is French doors with colonial bars- I like those white. All other exterior doors colour all the way :D

  15. Don't paint it white, you will so regret it! Go with your heart on this. and save yourself a lot of grief over the dirty looking white!

  16. I can see the appeal of white, but I'm jumping on the charcoal bandwagon. I don't think it will show dirt, scrapes as much and any salt (do you use road salt up there?) should wipe right off. Good luck.

Charcoal...I love that colour! I did the inside of my front and back doors that colour and it looks just as good inside the house as it does outside...and it looks amazing with whites and lighter colours!
I love the style of that door too!
