New Jute Rug in the Living Room

Saturday, November 10, 2012

If you haven't noticed by now, I'm pretty much the girl who says she will post about stuff and then never does. Well, eventually I do, but usually about a year later than I said I would. Whoopsie.

I am fully aware that I still have to give updates and/or posts on:

- how to build our front window box
- my blond to brown hair makeover
- whether or not we decided to keep the schoolhouse light fixture from Lowe's in our bedroom
- pictures of my wedding dress
- what happened with our basement renovation
- a burlap flower tutorial (oh man that was like, three years ago)
- our new living room rug
- what we did with those antique corbels
- how I wash my Ikea slipcovers
- the rest of the questions and answers from the FAQ post
- etc.
- etc.
- etc.

I haven't forgotten. They are all floating around in my brain giving me that you-have-things-you-should-be-doing-right-now feeling all the time.

I really could use a personal assistant to help me run my life. You can leave your resume at the end of this post, m'kay?

Anyway, I am very excited that I can finally update you on our living room rug that we purchased in the spring. Yes, in the spring. It's been folded up in a corner of our sun room since we brought it home.

Why folded up in the corner you ask? Well, when Alex started our basement renovation (cough, cough, two years ago, cough, cough) we brought some furniture up into the living room - including our giant t.v. and t.v. stand. They made the living room sooooo crowded. When we finally took the plunge and bought the rug, I didn't want to put it in our overly crowded, not how I like it, unfinished living room. I wanted to wait until the extra furniture was gone and the living room was all nicey-nice again.

Yes, I know how silly that sounds.

One night when we were talking, Alex mentioned that it was kind of crazy that I finally got the rug that I've always wanted and it was just sitting there not being used while I waited for the "perfect" time to put it out. Especially since we have two large dogs and a baby boy. Dear self: I am sorry to burst your bubble but your perfect rug will not stay perfect for long.

So, I called my father in-law over yesterday to help me move some furniture out of the living room while Alex was at work. I disconnected all of his Internet, PlayStation, and gizmo-gadget cables and crossed my fingers that he wouldn't lose his mind when he came home. It pretty much took me all day but I finally got the living room sort of back to normal.

With a new rug! Yippeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

(If you try this at home, make sure you have an open beer and a pizza waiting when your hubs gets home so he doesn't get mad that he no longer has a giant t.v. in the living room to watch all of his weird boy shows with guns and horses.)

The rug does exactly what I hoped it would do. It ties all of the furniture in the long, narrow room together. (I posted about the awkward layout here.) The rug just fits under the front two legs of all the couches and chairs, just like the decorating magazines say to do. (I just high-fived myself in my mind right there.)

In case you were wondering, the rug is jute and fully reversible. It was purchased from Muskoka Living interiors and we went with the largest size they had (9x12). They had several other jute rug styles but we chose the one with the lowest pile to minimize pulls from the dogs.

I have quite a few more items on my list to finish off this room (window treatments, lighting, wall art, cushions, corbels, etc.) but don't worry I'll make sure to share as I finish off those items. :)

Have a great weekend!

    1. Thanks Melanie!!! Are you loving your jute rug or what!?! Where did you get yours from?

I can't believe how cozy it makes our living room! And it helps disguise the rotten orange tint of our unfinished wood floors, too. Oh yeah. :)

The color on the walls is Gray Owl by Benjamin Moore mixed at 1/2 tint. I love it!

    2. Thanks I do love the color as well! I have recently become obsessed with asking everyone what color their walls are-even if I go into stores I ask! I think because I am amazed at how differently a paint color can look from one room or house to another because of lighting etc. ANYWAYS! We got our rug from IKEA after wanting one foreverrr and I found it instantly added a cozy feeling as well! :))

  4. Ahhh, I've been dying (DYING) to finally see it in the room! It looks fabulous. I'm trying to convince hubs to let me get the Heathered Chenille Jute rug from PB for our living room, but he keeps thinking it won't be comfortable. How is yours? We have a 2-year-old girl & 4-year-old boy, so it needs to be comfy enough for floor play, but flat enough for vehicle driving (I actually had a Thomas train in my purse and drove it on the display rug at PB to test it out -- yep, I sure did.) Hoping I get one soon!! In the meantime, I'll drool over yours.

    1. Heather!!!

I just checked out the Heathered Chenille Jute Rug from Pottery Barn and that was one of the ones that I was looking at before I picked this one. The only reason why I chose this one instead of the PB one was that I got to see it in person first and shipping from the States is always a nightmare. The pattern looks really similar to the one I just got!

I think the rug is softer than you would think. Obviously it's not one of those plush rugs that you want to rub your face all over, BUT it's not scratchy/uncomfortable. I'm actually amazed at how we all want to sit/lay on it now!!

I think you should go for it. The only other thing that I would consider is that spills have to be spot cleaned. I don't plan on letting Coops eat / drink in the living room so I'm not too worried although I know at some point there will be accidents I'm sure.

Good luck convincing your hubs and you'll have to let me know if/when you do get one! :)

    1. Oh poor Alex. We moved the t.v. and t.v. stand up into the stripey room that was pretty much empty except for a double bed and some end tables.

Everything is disconnected and all of the cables are in a tangled mess on the floor.

Surprisingly he isn't mad about it though! He's just been watching shows on his laptop instead. :)

  7. Which part of your body did you have to leave behind to buy the rug from Muskoka Living, LOL! Isn't that a beautiful store? Your living room looks so cozy. Did you need a rug pad for underneath? PS we need a Cooper picture overload soon! Love that adorable face!! Kelly

    1. Oh Kelly,

How did you know? I actually had to sell my soul.

It is the most beautiful store of all time and I think I could just move in and live in their showrooms.

I probably should get a rug pad for underneath but so far it hasn't moved because each edge is under some type of furniture.

I've heard that jute rugs can scratch the finish on hardwood floors when you don't have a rug pad but our floors need to be refinished anyway so I just plopped it down as is!

I will for sure post some more pictures of Cooper but most of the time I restrain myself so that my readers don't get annoyed. :)

    1. Hi Mandy!!!

Thank you for your comments. :)

The picture behind the sofa was purchased from a local Home Decor store in our city. However, I was able to find the print at Art.com! It's called Barn and Field I by Dysart. Here is the link:

  11. First of all, I totally get you. I wouldn't have wanted to unroll the rug until the room was ready either. In fact I did the exact same thing in my family room!

    1. The sofa / loveseat / armchair are all the Extorp series from Ikea. Love them! (Although the cushions are made differently now than they used to be and are a lot squishier.)

The wood floors are original to the house built in the 40's and are birch. We got our upstairs floors refinished and they look amazing. The main floor still has to be done but we're putting it off because we don't want to move all of our furniture!!!

      :)
