From a Queen to a King

Goodbye too-small queen bed. I will NOT miss you one little bit.

Oh, glorious day.

The day when we traded in our way-too-small-for-our-family queen-sized bed for a KING. It happened on the weekend and was only about ten years overdue.

Let me explain.

Way back in the day when Alex and I were sickeningly lovey-dovey and moving into our very first apartment together, we took any and all free furniture that we could get: including a hand-me-down queen-sized mattress set.

Don't say "ew" and "gross" because hey, we were poor back then and I vacuumed / febreezed that thing to death anyway.

Fast forward to today. We still have that stupid mattress set. That was like, ten years ago people!

I know this is going to sound ridiculous but I didn't want to spend that kind of money on something that no-one would ever see. Just like when Alex insisted that we needed a new furnace. I tried to convince him that 30 years wasn't too long to have a furnace at all. "Honey, a 30-year furnace life is the new 15-year furnace life."

So it was time to get a new mattress set. That's when we had to make the ultimate decision on whether or not to up-size to a King.

---------------------------------------------------------

Reasons to Upgrade to a King:

1) I need a lot of room on my side since I'm all over the map. Kind of how I imagine a little kid would sleep. Arms flailed, upside down, kicking...... yup that's me.

2) It turns out that a certain baby around here, Coopster, is a bit of a cuddle monkey. He starts off in his crib every night but then magically appears beside me in mine when I wake up in the morning. Soooooo freaky.

3) Despite my protests ("NO DOGS IN THE BED!"), Alex always invites the pups up onto the foot of the bed in the mornings. They are bigger bed hogs than me if that's even possible.

Reasons Not to Upgrade to a King:

1) We live in an old home with small bedrooms. A king sized bed in our master bedroom would leave room for, oh, nothing else. A dresser, maybe.

2) It took me about five years to find the blue/green quilt set that we currently have and I'm still in love with it.

---------------------------------------------------------

So after I woke up the other morning with a crink in my neck and was hanging off the side of the bed Mission Impossible style, I decided that we were going bed shopping.

That's when we ordered the King-sized bed of my dreams. I am shocked at how utterly excited I am. I'm actually having a little mini countdown on the calendar until our new bed is delivered.

T-minus 7 days. Yeah, baby. Yeah.

Wanna know the fun part? We found and bought a new headboard, too! I'll tell you all about it tomorrow. It deserves a post all of its own.

P.S. I made chocolate chip zucchini loaf for the first time this afternoon and it is too-die-for good. I wanted to take pictures of it to share with you but the little voice in my head told me no. Then it told me to go fold some laundry.

P.S.S. Do you let your pup(s) sleep with you? Your baby? Your husband? Your whole brood of kids? Your collection of porcelain dolls? Throw me a bone here, people. Tell me I'm not the only one!

  1. well my pregnancy pillow and husband our fighting for whatever room is left on our queen sized bed LOL it sounds like I sleep in the same style as you xD my poor husband is painfully aware that if it came down to him or the pillow in our bed with me at 8months the pillow will win hands down

  2. I was 100% completely against dogs in the bed... and now our 60 pound standard size Golden Doodle sleeps with us every night (she is as big as I am). We have a queen, which I used to love because I hated being so far apart in a a king, but now after a few years of marriage and an extra body in the bed (and eventually probably some kiddos in there too) we really want a king! Our master is a little small for one though, so we are waiting.

  3. We tried to train our dog to sleep on the floor or in her bed. Our bed is a low Ikea Malam bed and it became very difficult to keep her out of the bed. We are those people that allow the dog in the bed. And she usually goes under the covers and sleeps by our feet, it is weird. I do wake up sometimes though and she is seriously sharing the pillow with me.

I hope once we upgrade our bed to a king and also have to get a larger headboard and frame that we get something higher and maybe she cant get up as easily.

  4. I often snuggle with my cat. She'll sleep next to me, head on my pillow all night long. I can even hold onto her like a teddy bear and she'll sleep there for hours. The only problem is that she loves my face lotion and tries to lick my face all the time. I've posted a couple of snuggle photos on Instagram that I'm sure you've seen.

BTW, I'm totally jealous of your king sized bed. Jody and I love sleeping in a king every time we're on vacation. A king equals two separate beds in our world.

  5. Yes, yes, yes.....our dog sleeps with us! Shh....don't tell anyone. She is only 16 pounds. She starts off in her crate (we never shut the door), but then magically, sometime during the wee hours she appears snuggled closely to my side in a little white furry ball. How could anyone resist that??? Besides, she gives off less heat than my husband, which at this time of life is a blessing.

  6. Owen slept with us in our queen bed almost every night until he was 2.5. Now he calls for me to go to his bed when he wakes up in the middle of the night, and I'm usually too tired to drag myself back to mine once he falls asleep again, so now he & I spend most of our nights smushed together in his twin bed. And we did not get him the most comfortable mattress.... Unfortunately, we just got a new bed like a year ago and it was sized to our tiny 1949 Victoria house, not our 1997 Calgary McMansion (ok, it's not THAT big but compared to our Victoria one, it feels huge). If I were to do it all again, I would get us a king and Owen a more comfy double! ha ha! :) I'm jealous - enjoy your new bed!

  7. I have had a king for years. It was my first big purchase when I bought my first house. Everything else was hand me downs but I was having that bed! I foster German Shepherds and have has as many as 7 at a time. (Yes, it's pretty clear I need professional help!) Sometimes as many as 3 plus me in the bed, but its amazing how much just one 110 lb dog can take up an entire bed. They always seem to want to lay right in the middle and I have to made due around them! BTW, occasionally when I've hit a good yard sale or thrift-tique and find a Queen comforter or bedspread, I get it. So what if it's a little shorter on the edges! If I love it I don't care! And you can always fold it at the bottom, or layer it! You will love it, and will not know how you survived with out it.

  8. We got a king size bed and have never looked back!! You will LOVE it. My Mister is 6'4 so he sleeps much better with the extra room (and all 5'4 of me does too since he's the all over the place sleeper). People used to say to us that a smaller bed is better for cuddling, but cuddle schmuddle!! You can still cuddle in the middle of a great big king bed and then sprawl out when you need to...like when the beagle jumps up and sleeps under the covers, and then 60lb lab puppy jumps up too....lol. It does suck though that you'll have to get new bedding; I'm like you and it takes me FOREVER to find something that I'm satisfied with. Enjoy!!!

  9. our dog (lab mix) sleeps with us even though my husband would prefer that he didn't. the thing is though, that the dog was there first! how can I deny him a spot in the bed after he slept in bed with me for years? just wait till we add the baby.

  10. OOO, I can't wait to see it! I do love the before photo :) I'm a bed hog too, though I would want the king all to myself! :)

  11. Oh this post made me laugh! We have a king-couldn't IMAGINE going smaller now-I NEED my space! My husband always tells me we're going to get a super single-for cuddling purposes! He also reminisces about the queen size bed we had for our first bed-which was also a hand-me-down cuz we were poor! but I don't reminisce about that cuz I LOVE our king too much! You'll LOVE it!! congrats!

  12. Oh, glorious king beds! We, too, had a queen for the first few years of marriage before we remodeled and could upgrade to a king...from day one you will never look back! No more knowing every single move your mate makes in the middle of the night--sweet ignorant bliss, I say! And yes, for a few years we let our little beagle sleep in that queen bed with us...and she was a total bed hog, pushing us to the edges so she could stretch out diagonally across the middle. Stinker. :) But we've never let either of our kids in our bed...go figure.

I love your bedding--I say keep it! I'd find a cream or blue or green king size comforter or solid quilt for the base and then layer your current set over the top--it's so pretty! That's what I did with our king bed when I found a cream velvet quilt+sham set on clearance that I loved, even though it was a queen. I bought 3 Euro pillows and shams at IKEA (great prices), then layered the two standard shams in front, and 1-2 more throw pillows in the center to balance it all out.

  14. When we had a queen eventually and due to my husbands snoring we couldn't sleep in the same bed . My babies slept in our bed at times but not always , occassionaly when little and nursing . No dogs in my bed , they sleep with our kids . Now that we have a king bed and no one snores we sleep together peacefully , love the king ! Wish we had gotten one earlier .

  15. I am all for having pets, especially dogs, but sleeping with them in your bed is a huge no-no. How revolting! I only want to sleep beside another human being thanks. My dearest friend sleeps with her Cocker Spaniel and it is really gross, the bed and carpet is covered in pet hair all the time. It can't be healthy sleeping with animals in your bed or on it.

  16. Guilty. We worked for 8 months to train our basset to sleep on a dog bed beside us (and come up for snuggles in the morning). All that work was undone in one night when my mom was visiting and cooking and banging around in our kitchen late one night, and the dog wouldn't settle...so my husband let her into bed with us. That was 4 years ago. Since then we have added a foxhound, who was used to sleeping on the bed in her foster home. And now our 2.5 year-old daughter usually ends up in bed with us at some point during the night. Amazing how cramped a king bed can get...with me hanging off of the edge, scavenging corners of pillows for my poor head, and grasping at edges of blankets that won't quite cover me.

  17. My cat doesn't sleep with me but comes into the bedroom every morning at 7am and wakes me up, but if its a thunder storm in the night all bets are off, all the cats and if Angus is staying over (my daughter's dog) they are all trying to get into bed.

  18. About two weeks ago we up-sized from a double to a queen. Seven years I've been waiting for this with my feet hanging off the end of the bed every. single. night.
My new queen (your old little) feels like a bus after a mini. A new bed is all kinds of amazing!

  20. 1.) We have a queen and I HATE it, but no room in our current home for a king :( 2.) Up until three years ago we had a hand me down mattress as well, we were poor too... and still kind of are- hahaha!!! 3.) I have been missing your posts a ton since I have been on a lot recently. I am going to peruse through the blog to catch up on your life. Hope all is well!

  21. Each morning I wake up with both kids in the bed (having their knees in my back all night) I think I need a King bed.

  22. I cannot wait until the day we get a king! I need my space, and that's with no kids, no dogs!

  23. SO WISE! We have often tried to convince ourselves that a King is something we should purchase but the sad fact that always keeps us from it is we purchases a brand new QUEEN (seriously) only 4 short years ago. Fast forward to Dexter the Golden Retriever and Michael the toss about toddler who loves to sleep between mommy and daddy. Did I mention mommy was pregnant with baby number 2? Oh to have a king. It should be REAL interesting when this next one is born since I'm a huge proponent of co-sleeping (hey, some are some aren't!)

  24. My husband and I got a king bed finally about 3 years ago. BEST purchase ever. We are both tall and have 4 dogs (smaller than yours but still 4!) that sleep in bed with us! SO yes we let the pooches in. And out 14month old daughter comes in for snuggle time in the morning also. Love having a big bed :)

  25. KING KING KING! I just upgraded and couldn't be happier! It does take a lot of space in the room but sleeping has never been better. I do let kids and puppies in with us and now I can sleep and enjoy their presence at the same time. Let's face it is nice to be all squeezed in together for like 20 minutes but then a little extra space is better!

  26. I know I'm a bit late to comment on your post -- I am so behind reading blogs that I'm subscribed to! -- but I have to tell you that I am so glad to read your post (and others' comments) about a queen vs. a king. You see, we're about to make that decision as well, and we've been struggling with it. Our queen mattress is old and lumpy and needs to be replaced, and admittedly the queen size is a bit too small now, especially since our little Jack Russell terrier is a bed hog (which is so funny to say since she's so small). Plus, my husband is a big man. I think you (and others) convinced me to go with a king.
