Why We Still Don't Have Closet Doors in the Master Bedroom

Our Master Bedroom is such a neglected little space. It gets no love.

Well, it did get an itty bitty bit of love when we upgraded from a queen-sized bed to a king.

Best.Decision.Ever.

I'm pretty sure I mentioned at some point that we took the dated louvered bi-fold doors off of both closets with the intention of replacing them with the same closet doors we put in the front entry and the breakfast room.

Here's the front entry closet door:

Here is the breakfast room closet door:

Here are the old doors that we replaced:

And here are the master bedroom closets with no doors:

A few months ago Alex and I had had enough of clothes falling out onto the floor (time for another closet clean-up maybe?) and headed to Lowe's with some measurements. We were sort of expecting that they might not have the size that we needed in stock and we would have to order some in.

What we weren't expecting was to figure out was that they didn't have the size we needed at all because the bedroom closet doorways are about an inch and a half narrower than the closets on the main floor. Which means we would need to get custom doors made and ordered.

And they are $300+ a piece. Booooooo.

So that's the story of why we still don't have closet doors in our Master Bedroom. Maybe one day.

P.S. The boys have almost all of the old siding stripped off The Fixer Upper and are ordering insulation this week. That's a project that will hopefully be happening sooner than those closet doors. ;)

P.S.S. Sandwiches taste WAY better when they are cut into little baby-friendly strips. Just sayin'.

P.S.S.S. I got an outdoor rug for our back deck. I'll show you as soon as I sweep off all of those darned helicopters.

  1. I love your downstairs doors.... but your bedroom ones.... yuck... could you possibly cover them with thin wood ...I know there is a name for that... and then add the srtips like your other ones????
As for you sandwiches cut into stripes.... we call them soldiers... my kids loved them...when they were toasted then they became toast soldiers... also great for dipping into soup.

  2. Can you buy some plain bi-fold doors and just add the trim? The trim should easy enough, but do they have the plain bifolds in your size?

And then mount them like little french doors - easier access into the ends/corners of the closet!

    1. That is a great idea, 'cept it's the doorways that are an inch and a bit smaller than the smallest standard size!

      Boooo.

  3. The new ones are really nice. Just wondering if you could you ask a local carpenter about cutting some width off to compensate for the narrower opening. Maybe over the two doors it would be doable, maybe not if they are hollow core. Just a thought. We also do not have closet doors on our bedroom closets. The builder put in super ugly and cheap laminate and metal sliders that over the past 14 years have gotten pretty roughed up so we just tossed them. Now I need to build in door openings to fit the doors and your new bifold style would be really nice.

    1. I think that's what we are going to try to do! Great idea. :)

  4. I wonder if a Habit for Humanity re-sale store or salvage place would have doors? Or buy solid doors and cut them to size? There's gotta be a way!!

    1. I think we're going to try and get the smallest size they have and then cut them down on each side. Nothing is easy in an old house, that's for sure!

  5. our master is the same way! we actually juuust got a new mattress today, and it's the first thing we've done at all in there. ugh.

p.s. you might want to try some local door suppliers for cheaper.

Have you thought of removing the wall in between the two closets? That would give you more space and perhaps help with the dooor situation (might become a standard size). Alternatively, use the standar size doors (like the downstairs) and mount them on barn door hardware (i.e., sliding doors). Just some thoughts.

    1. I had actually never even thought of that!

Now the only problem I see with that awesome idea is that I don't want Alex's boy clothes with cooties to go near my side.

      Hahaha!

  7. Hi! Do you mind me asking where you purchased the doors you have in the front entryway and breakfast room? I love them and don't see them online. Thanks!

    1. The closet doors on the main floor were from Home Depot! We got the solid wood version and primed / painted them white.

  8. I agree with Elizabeth. A local carpenter should be able to modify the doors to fit your space quite easily.
