Mattress Mix-Ups Make Me Mad

Tuesday, December 4, 2012

Well if the title of this post didn't give it away.... I am so, so, so frustrated! I thought my head was about to explode this morning when we got a call at 7:30 a.m. from the mattress / bed delivery guy. He wanted to know if we ordered a king-sized headboard, a king-sized frame, a king-sized box-spring, and a QUEEN-SIZED mattress on purpose.

No. No we did not.

I had to sit around for the whole rest of the day waiting for the delivery of our mismatched mattress set. (The delivery company only tells us that it will be delivered between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.)

Instead of waiting and watching out the window in excitement I was waiting and watching in frustration at such a ridiculous mistake. Who doesn't double check their order before placing it? Apparently our saleslady at Sears.

To make matters worse, the delivery guys wouldn't put together the headboard / frame / box-spring combo that was delivered because they said a king-sized mattress might not fit up our staircase.

WHAT!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????????????????

The saleslady told us that the mattress would bend in half and go up the stairs no problem.

Insert any assortment of expletives here: ________________.

The next possible delivery date for our king-sized mattress is this Saturday which means we will have to sleep on our old, yucky mattress on the floor for the next four nights. Awesome.

Then, on Saturday, I'll have to wait around for another ten hours for them to deliver our new mattress and it might not even make it up the stairs.

Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  1. Breathe deeply. Take it easy. It's only a mattress. When we ordered a queen mattress and box spring, we found out that our box spring could not navigate the corner of our stairs, so back it went. We then had to order a split box spring and add $100 to our order. The best laid plans and all that, right? Seriously, don't stress about this kind of stuff in life, OK?

    1. I do appreciate your calm approach but I was SO excited. I stayed up until midnight the night before cleaning every slat on our blinds, scrubbing the baseboards, washing the curtains, vacuuming, washing the floor, etc.

I was SO looking forward to a pretty bedroom update and a decent night's sleep.

In the grand scheme of things I know it will all work out, however in the moment all I can see is my time wasted and my excitement squashed.

  2. Oh that is FRUSTRATING!! You are SO allowed to be angry about this!

I will say that king mattresses are crazy bendy so don't stress about that - it should make it! We literally had to bend ours in half to get it upstairs!

    1. Oh, you are making me feel a smidgen better.

The delivery guys said they might be able to use ratchet straps to smush the bed and get it upstairs. My fingers are crossed!

  4. Yikes, that sucks! When we ordered our king sized mattress (yes it was from Sears) I told the sales clerk that I wanted to be home for the delivery. They delivered it before they were suppose to and only my kids were home. They had to bend it to get it up the stairs. When I got home from work the kids mentioned our new mattress was delivered early. I was not happy that they came when I wasn't home (makes me nervous just having the kids home) and they bent it the wrong way and it had a huge hump in it so it wouldn't lay flat on the box spring. We also had to reorder another one but kept the humpy one until the new one arrived. No issues with the second one! So happy ending, yes? Heres hoping for a hump free mattress!

    1. I would not feel comfortable having my kids alone with strangers either.

I will make sure to look up the mattress model and figure out if and how we can bend it.

Thanks for the heads up, girl!

  5. Wow so much for customer service and Sears is supposed to be changing to be more competitive with all the new American stores coming to Canada. Someone forgot to tell your saleslady.

Don't know about king sized but I had the same problem as your first comment. It was the Brick but queen sized boxspring wouldn't fit down the stairs - $100 more but they took back the full one and brought the 2 part one the next day.

  6. Gah! That sucks!!! I know how much you were looking forward to that king sized bed:( Man, incompetent people at jobs like that piss me off. And between 8am - 6pm? Really? I'm so sorry, Sarah!

  7. I am so glad other people get pissed at this sh-t too. One time I ordered a fridge from Sears - they put in the delivery for one month later than it was supposed to be. Wouldn't change the date. So I canceled the order. BUGGY! BTW - King mattresses do fold in half. I just told our "professional" movers that and it was news to them. They really do. That's how we got our mattress monster up our narrow stairs. Have a better day tomorrow!

  8. All will be well but I do understand your frustration after cleaning and doing the window blinds. After all that I'd be upset too, especially their delivery time!

  9. Folding in half, and ratchet straps, eh? Handy info. to have, since we have an old house with an enclosed and somewhat narrow staircase. Our king sized mattress entered up and over the second floor balcony outside of our bedroom, with the help of my husband, brothers, and father-in-law.

  10. (Now, it's a good thing your post wasn't about moving pianos, or I would have a long story to tell about that process...bringing a taller-than-usual antique upright piano into an old, second floor apartment accessed by very narrow stairs and a roof walkway...requiring a second moving company after the first got it there and refused to bring it up, and left it in the landlord's garage instead...resulting in the second mover using make-shift ramps from the truck onto the garage roof...).

  11. It's those kind of things that can really get under our skin and drive us around the bend!! I think I have a pretty good perspective on life but these kind of things are so maddening. So much in life we just have to suffer through but why oh why when it all seemed so straight forward...but it always seems to happen!! I tell you, I'm almost afraid to purchase anything anymore, there always seems to be an episode attached.

Anyways, here's hoping that once you get through the rigamaroule it all is as lovely as you envisioned. ~Dawne

  12. If the box spring made it up, the mattress most definitely will!! Fingers crossed for you! And until then, imagine you and Alex are starving newlyweds who fill their evenings with lit candles and scrabble games on their mattress on the floor :)

  13. Only two more days until new mattress day! I'm sending super bendy thoughts across the pond to you and your mattress ;-) I'm sure it'll fit just fine. I too hate it when these so called 'professionals' mess up - when we moved into this house we ordered all new bedroom furniture (except for bed thank goodness) which was supposed to be deliver a day or so after we moved in. We were furniture-less for six weeks! All our clothes etc. lived in a sorry heap in the floor and it drove me CRAZY!!! But... Um... You know, I'm totally over it now..... ;-) x

  14. Oh no that's terrible!!!! I will say a prayer and keep my fingers crossed it fits for you! I probably shouldn't say this but we have an old cape cod home and had to do a miss match job for our bed as well. Our new queen sized bed was a SUPER tight fit. Had to use an old, queen sized box spring from my husbands bachelor days with our mattress since the new box spring was too deep to fit up the stairs. Luckily the mattress with much bending, maneuvering, and close to heart attack induced pushing went up. But I must warn you, I hope you have some left over paint to touch up because it nicked up our walls and part of the ceiling. Fingers crossed for you!!!!
