New Patio Set for the Deck

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

Back in March I mentioned that we finally picked out and purchased a set of lounge chairs and loveseat for our lower deck. We were so pleased with ourselves since it meant that we had real deck furniture like real grown-ups.

Here is one of the lounge chairs that we bought back in March:

Even with that awesome purchase (see post here) we were still on the hunt for an outdoor table and chair set for the upper deck. In my dream of all dreams we would have a wooden set like the ones from Pottery Barn. Unfortunately $3000 for outdoor furniture is a leeeeeetle out of our budget.

I went back to a local Canadian chain store about five times to look at a particular table and chair set that I thought would coordinate well with the lounge chairs we already purchased from Lowes.

Finally, I just took the plunge and told Alex it was the one. The timing coincided perfectly with my birthday a few weeks ago and I chose the set as my birthday gift.

Happy birthday to meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Like always, I was uneasy about the purchase because I wanted it to be just right. The price was super low so I was also worried that the set would be cheaply made.

I am happy to share that we LOVE the table and chair set and have used it almost every nice day since we got it.

We were lucky enough to snag the table and six chairs during a 20% off sale so we ended up spending:

Table - $104
Chair - $40
Chair - $40
Chair - $40
Chair - $40
Chair - $40
Chair - $40
Umbrella - $99

Total: $443 + taxes

The umbrella that went with the set was bright orange so we ended up finding a neutral one that we liked better at Costco.

The next picture will show you how both the upper and lower deck look with the furniture. This is the view when you're walking out of the back door onto the deck:

Now that we have the basics taken care of, now comes the fun stuff. I can't wait to add some cheery throw pillows, some planters with flowers, an outdoor rug, and who knows what else I'll find for the space.

How's your deck looking this summer so far? Any good deals on outdoor furniture?

    1. Thanks Jenny! It's nowhere near my dream deck yet, but it's a start.

I've been following along on your outdoor space, too. I'm so sad that Joss and Main doesn't ship to Canada though. Booooo.

    1. Thanks Nancy!!

You are welcome to come and chill on the back deck whenever you like. As long as you don't look over the railing to see the crusty lawn.

      Haha. :)

If only my "blog friends" lived closer.... sigh..... :)

  5. Ahh so jealous! I want a patio or deck in our backyard so badly. Our patio set is sinking into the ground as we speak and the grass under the table is dead and just a mess lol. Your deck looks awesome and kudos to your hubby for doing such a great job!

    1. Thanks so much! I will pass along your message to Alex and it will make his day.

Don't be too jealous though.... I had to wait YEARS before I had a deck and then even more years to have a table.

      You'll have yours soon enough.

      :)

  7. this is my first time visiting your blog and i really love it! Great find for the patio set, we bought our cast iron set for $2000 and it was already discounted, the good thing about our set is, it definitely does NOT rust (we left it out with a tarp over during our Canadian winter) but we store away our chairs....just in case. Really like your deck as well...was it built by yourself or did you hire someone to do it....and its pressure treated wood right?

    1. Thank you SO MUCH! What a nice compliment that you love my dorky site. :)

Glad to hear your set didn't rust, especially since you paid so much money for it.

We hope ours holds up over the winter, too. The good thing about it being so cheap is that if it doesn't last we can always replace it in a few years. Hopefully we don't have to though!

To answer your questions about the deck, yes we built the deck ourselves with the help of a few willing family members. :) I designed it and hubby built it. Although he did not see the need for a lower deck, I made him add one anyway. Haha.

Yes, the wood is pressure-treated. It's just faded quite a bit from the sun.

    2. It took us 2 years to built ours and since our yard is quite large we wrapped our side deck and back yard deck altogether....I regret using pressure treated wood for our back deck b/c it gives you splinters...my nephews complains about it all the time! For our side deck we used composite (which is great and it doesn't fade). We actually just cleaned the side deck yesterday with a pressure washer and everything came right off. We also bought patio heaters (www.eieihome.com/blog/let-s-talk-patio-heaters.html) dont quite sure how you feel about posting links but these babies are awesome for cool summer nights, hanging out on the deck with family and friends....although it's a bit pricey but personally i think its quite worth it :)

  8. Love your new patio set! We've been looking for some nicer chairs for to go with our glass-topped patio table but no luck. Either they're too cheap-looking and seem like they'll fall apart after one season, or else they're ridiculously expensive. May I ask where you found yours?

  9. Thanks Melanie!

We bought the table and chair set at Canadian Tire!!!

Good luck with your chair shopping and I hope you find something that you like. :)
