Hi, It's a New Blog Layout

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Hey there girlfriend. Just thought I'd share a little update that I'm working on a new blog layout this week. It's coming together but definitely not finished yet.

I mentioned before that I was thinking about moving this Blogger blog over to Wordpress. Truth is, I installed Wordpress a few weeks ago and tried playing around with it. It was a bit confusing for little old me.

So, I searched the 'net instead until I found a Blogger theme that had a crisp, clean layout AND the reply to comments feature that I was wanting.

For now, please don't mind the spacing and font glitches, etc. I'll try to have it all nice and pretty again by the end of the week.

:)

P.S. If you've got any advice for me as I'm adding new features n' things, please share. I'll be your bestie.

    1. I used a theme from this shop and am tweaking it to my liking. There are about 9 different themes available at a time and they change every month.

  5. I love the look of it. The only thing is that the blog width is gigantic and while I'm sure it'll look fine on my widescreen at home, on my normal-sized screen at work I can only see about 3/4 of the screen at any given moment which kinda impedes the whole loving on the new layout :(

Where oh where did you find this though? I really do think it's quite perfect for your blog.

    1. Hi Jess,

I think you're right about the really wide part. I'm not really used to the two sidebar thing but maybe I can shrink it a bit. Thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it.

I read another blog called The Lovely Cupboard (http://www.thelovelycupboard.com/) and she used Blogmilk for her blog design so I checked out their page and found a theme that kind of went with my "cute" vibe. They have a bunch more different ones and they offer new ones each month, it's kind of neat!

  7. I wonder who's weirder...me or you?! I think probably me. Either way, your blog is definitely better looking;) Grrr...I'm such a slacker. This looks great!! Its so CUTE:) And you actually reply back to people's comments. You are nicer! I've been to that site before...thanks for the link again. So you bought the template and then they sent you instructions and you implemented it and added your header, etc.? Was it all very hard?

Ps. The light in little man's room looks fantastic! Jealous of your overhead lighting capability!!

    1. I am definitely weirder. There's only so much weirdness I'm willing to share on the blog but in person.... aye yay yay. Haha!

Reply to comments is the whole reason I switched over. I was terrible at responding to comments via email, especially since most people don't have an email address in their profile. It was such a pain! So hopefullly I can interact more with people and not seem like such a blog snob. ;)

I bought the template and they sent me a download with instructions. It was pretty easy to install but I did have to go and fix a few things so that it looked normal (i.e. the text was really small so I made it bigger).

You can go into 'design' on Blogger and change the fonts, colours, and text sizes fairly easily.

I made a new, simpler blog header in Photoshop and just uploaded it through Blogger (and Photobucket)(Photobucket corrects the blurry thing that Blogger has going on right now).

The only tricky part is the sidebars are quite narrow and they don't seem to fit all the text. I've been playing around with the html to fix it but I haven't figured it out yet. That's the only tricky part so far....

  8. Ps. Me again. I kinda like the SVART theme they have. Maybe this is the answer to all my problems? You say they change up the themes every month? So you could like go through all this and then find out in May that they have one you like better? Sorry for all the questions!! Thank goodness you can reply to comments...ha! (It would be nice to have this on my blog too.)

    1. I like the simple design of the Svart theme, too. Plus, gotta love a name like "Svart". Hahahaha. The site sells only 15 of each template so that they don't have too many of the same out there on the Web. Also, I think that every month they have new ones available. I inquired about the one I just got, and they told me there was only 3 left and they would be switching in 10 days or so. So I bought it ASAP. I do run the risk of seeing one I like better but this one had POLKA DOTS! Hahahaha. I think I'm really liking this reply to comments thing. Look at how long of a reply you get!!!! Hee heeeee.

So, are you going to get one tooooooo?

  9. It looks great, I like the subtle colours. I just changed mine around today too!

  10. Wow! Seriously, thank you so much for taking the time to reply back to me and with such long ones too!! Gosh, I don't know if I would be able to keep up with replying to everyone's comments...I mean you can't sit around and do this all day, right? You're going to have a baby to take care of at some point!!! This is so nice of you. Thanks for explaining more about how blogmilk works. Interesting about them only selling 15 of each template, that makes sense. This seems like a pretty cool/fairly inexpensive way to make your blog look a lot better without having to hire someone to do a complete custom redesign/learn coding yourself, etc. Something like this might be my best bet. Now I'm looking at SVART more and I would want my own header, like not that huge shadow text with the triangles. Can you change the headers on any of the templates? and I eventually want to add some tabs/nav bar thing with About, House Tour, etc like you have but I don't know if I see that on Svart. Hmmm...Ok, I feel like I'm hijacking your post now/instant messaging with you so I will stop now (plus Maura is waking up from her nap), but I really really appreciate all your help and for pointing me in this direction:)

    Ps. Polka dots are classic.

  14. Yay, Sarah! I guess I'm going to have to look into Wordpress too... I started my own blog in January, and have only posted twice! (Bad Jackie, BAD!!) Maybe if I stopped Facebooking and Pinterest-ing I'd.... NO, NEVER!! *sigh* I guess I'll have to stay with what I have for now...

And someone mentioned COLORS! Yes, I too love the fact you have some colors here (although I do love what you've done with your cute little home!)... good that you are taking the color leap here...

Congrats on the move to the new site, and keep it up! I'm a labor and delivery nurse, so I've been really excited to see how you guys are doing with Little Ninja's arrival... Looking forward to it!

    Have a great day!

  17. This looks so cute, Sarah! I wish I could think of something to jazz my site up. The thing with the comments though...I thought all the blogs on blogger who have comments embedded under the posts (like you have here) have the ability to reply to comments now. I'm going to look at mine and see. Anyway, I love the cute little social networking buttons you have in your footer. Were they part of your new template? :)
