More Cushions and a Need-Your-Help Dilemma

Thursday, February 24, 2011

'Member how I got this striped fabric to make some cushion covers? Well I got the fabric for a steal at $4 per meter at Fabricland. I was able to make five cushions with two meters (and I still have a bit left over). Since I had the pillow forms already, the project cost me about $1.60 per pillow. Sweet.

Now that I have five cushions I can spread them out on the couch, loveseat, and chair in the living room. One day but probably never I might find some other cushions that will go with these ones. They don't have to be totally matchy matchy but similar colour tones would be kinda nice. I'll keep dreaming about that.

Oh new cushions, you're my favourite. Except the flat one (far left).

I went back to Fabricland to see if the fabric is still on sale. You see, I've still gotta recover the four chairs in the breakfast room and whaddaya know the green stripes go very nicely with the newly painted green walls. I think the same fabric would look really cute as seat covers, however I don't want the same fabric everywhere. Dilemmas, dilemmas.

My other dilemma is this little spot in the living room. We've got a small wall between the kitchen doorway and the dining room doorway. It's big enough for a loveseat but not really much else. I love the picture hanging above the loveseat but the two by themselves (loveseat + picture) make the spot seem really lost (to me, anyway).

I have a floor lamp on one side for now but I need to figure out what to do for the long term.

I've been kicking around a few ideas:

1. Double floor lamps flanking the loveseat kinda like these pictures:

2. Hardwired lights/sconces kind of like these pictures:

3. Skinny benches on either side of the loveseat kind of like this picture:

4. Insert your brilliant idea here: _________________________________________________.

Each option has it's cons. Except yours 'cause you're smart like that.

Double lamps might look kind of squishy, Alex would have to add wiring to the wall for wall sconces, and benches would be really low. My mom and aunt both think all of those options would make the spot too busy. But to me the spot looks too empty.

I'd love to hear your thoughts. What do you think?

  1. I think I kinda like the idea of the sconces, but I understand how big of a pain the whole wiring thing will be.....so, with that being said...my vote is another floor lamp! 2. I love the double floor lamps - very cute and not too busy. Plus it's less permanent than re-wiring if you change your mind...

  4. well to avoid the wiring problem why not 2 candle sconces.....

  5. I like the option of the floor lamps flanking the loveseat best. Although I don't think that the wall looks empty at all. Maybe some nice candle holders mounted to the wall would be nice too. Or some smaller frames on either side of the picture?
I am sure there will be a lot of creative ideas from all the other readers...

  6. I love the double floor lamp idea with some chunky shades or you could put a small grouping of 3 smaller pics on either side of the large one. Or add a little grouping of few plain white pretty plates on either side..?

  7. I love the idea of scones ... you can get the plug in kind and use a cord cover and paint it the same colour as the wall ....

  8. I like the idea of the wall sconces myself. I think two lamps might make it look a bit cluttered between the doors and the sconces would flank the picture nicely. a small bench or a basket would work nicely on the floor next the loveseat.
    have fun,

  9. i don't think it looks too empty, but i tend to be a minimalist! i agree with the candle sconce idea, or maybe a small piece of metal art for each side?

  10. While I was reading I was thinking sconces, and then I thought, to avoid wiring, candle sconces. I see someone else had the same thought:) And maybe one or both of the little benches on either side?

  11. I like the idea of the skinny bench and then you could place a tall plant or something on it to balance the look. Or you could build a very skinny sofa table to put behind the sofa and put candlesticks etc on it. Then you could put a small round table next to the couch.
I remember you mentioning in another post that you don't like a lot of the fabric at your fabric store. Maybe try looking at tablecloths at places like Target. You might find something cute and cheap to recover your chairs with. Good luck with your primping! I always think all that you do in your home looks beautiful!

  12. What if you put a ledge shelf behind the loveseat kind of a like a mock sofa table. Then you could put a pair of buffet lamps on the shelf. Smaller scale and no commiment of hardwiring :0)

  13. I would have to vote for the benches or some sort of stool on either side of the couch So you have a spot to toss drinks and magazines, and 2 matching lamps. Or for a first choice, wall sconces (more wiring, but I like the idea!! And the wall is fine how it is, but you could try to add two smaller pics, or architectural pieces to either side of the big pic, and no I don't think that would be too busy at all, it would be more cozy.

Just my 2 cents. Can't wait to see what you decide :)!!

  14. I think maybe a little table. I'm not sure the benches, because they are low, but maybe if you could find a small side table, so if you have coffee or something, you have a palce to set it down.
Completly off the topic: I love, love, love the picture above the couch. Where might I be able to find one?

  15. I love the first of the wall sconces but what if you decide later on that you want to move the sofa and put a freestanding dresser or something similar there?

Two floor lamps in a dark timber to match the frame is what I would go for personally.

  16. i love the idea of sconces, and then you could find very narrow tables on each side which would give you somewhere to set your drink. some narrow tables made from an old vanity might be perfect there.

  17. I like the sconces, and they don't have to be hard wired. Or, how about an asymmetrical wall grouping? Similar to the pic you posted with the flanking lamps and a art grouping on the wall behind? Maybe a mix of all of those things...floor lamp on one side, sconce lamp on the other, with a side table, wall grouping? I guess it sounds like it could get really busy, but you could definitely tone it up or down for your space.

  18. I was just going to say the same thing others said... candle sconces!

  19. I like the floor lamp idea - probably because I don't like to commit! But I do think it would look pretty!

  20. I think you need a different picture (or something) hanging over the sofa. The pic you have is too square and heavy-framed. Go for something a little more horizontal.

  21. I too think the picture is too dark and heavy looking over the white couch. Maybe you'd be satisfied if you had a row of 3 or so lighter framed pictures above the couch.

  22. Love all those cute cushions Sarah! I vote for the candle sconces too...then you can always change it in the future if you want. ~Deb~

  23. I think two smaller square tables (to mirror the shape of the frame) on each side w/ a cute small table lamp on each one. I bet your handy hubby could make you some! Also then you'll have more flat space for cute accessories!! Or a coffee. Not sure if the tables should be dark wood, or a chippy white - it's a small space, so you don't want it too dark looking. Good luck with what you choose!

  24. ..like the large, round, creamy mirror idea, seen in the first magazine photo.

  26. Love the pillows
and LOVING the double floor lamps! I've never been a huge floor lamp fan, but you've just changed my mind! LOVE them!

  27. Double floor lamps. The one you have there now looks likes it needs a friend. hehe. Seriously I think like many others have said there is less commitment than wiring sconses and you can always use them somewhere else in your house.
