Curtains For The Sunroom. Finally!

Wednesday, February 2, 2011

Oh curtains how I love you so.

I finally, finally, finally have curtains in the sunroom!!!

It only took about five years to 1) convince Alex that it wasn't a waste of money, 2) choose the right ones, 3) purchase and order them from the States, and 4) have them installed. Phew. Done. Finally.

In case you missed it, we have a sunroom at the front of the house that is off the living room. It has five very large windows. From outside, you can basically see through the sunroom through the whole main floor of the house. When we first moved in, I ripped down all of the ugly old sheers which left the windows bare and uh, wide open for the neighbours to see through every night when the sun went down.

The sunroom when we moved in. Eeek!

The windows are non-standard sizes so at the time it was next to impossible to find roller blinds or shades that fit. This was back when you couldn't get them cut to size at Lowes or Home Depot which you can now (bugger). My first choice would have been brown bamboo shades like the rest of the house but it wasn't an option. Finally we decided to custom order some white, faux-wood 2" blinds. They have been great for privacy at night but they just made the room look so stark and blah. I really, really wanted some curtains to soften them up. But since we had already spent quite a few bones on the white blinds, Alex said no way.

Stark, plain blinds.

Me making a giant mess as usual.

Fixing the chipped paint before the rods/curtains could be installed.

After four years he finally gave in. Yay!!!

I chose some white cotton/linen tie-up shades from Pottery Barn. I had to send them to my in-laws who then shipped them up to me. I decided to go with dark brown curtain rods for a bit of contrast and to match our dark brown light fixture.

We needed two 12 foot rods for the two sets of windows.

Love.

I even made a new best-friend while I was at Lowes. His name is Michael. We talked window treatments for over an hour and he helped me figure out all of my measurements. Alex asked him if I was bothering him and he said, "No, she's fabulous!" Hence the new best-friend thing.

My mom came over to help me install the rods and hang the curtains on Sunday. I was anticipating that it would take an hour or two, not from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Uh, yeah. Good luck trying to install a 12 foot rod on a 12.5 foot wall with four closed brackets that you have to feed the rod through. Ahhhh, glitches.

Can you tell the difference?

Here was one of the other glitches, the finials had to be jammed up against eachother. Doh.

Hmmmm, rolled or should I try them droopy?

View from the living room into the sunroom.

Simple bow.

Right now I've got the shades rolled up with the bows tied down at the bottom. I can't wait to see how they look all droopy-like, or with the bows up higher, or with some shades lower than the others. So many options for me to bore you with down the road....... can't wait! ;)

P.S. It's really hard to take pictures of windows.

P.S.S. Our sunroom is attached to the living room which is attached to both the entry and the dining room. They're all yellow. I like yellow. It's pretty.

P.S.S.S. My bedroom closet is still clean. Thank you for all of your comments about it. I love knowing that I'm not the only one that has/had a shamefully disorganized closet.

  5. Those look great! Isn't it amazing how the wrong curtains can make a room really gloomy? It looks so dark in the before pics. Too much frill for me. MUCH loving the new window treatments.

  14. Love your sunny sunroom!! and yellow is a great color :) You did a great job and the windows definately look finished now. Glad to know that it takes other people a lonnnnng time to finish projects too. You know how baseboards never seem to get done in a reno. Our living room saw one change and the baseboards didn't get done in the room until the second go around! Sheesh!! Where are all those great "crews" who get the rooms back together on those decorator shows! would love a visit from one of them as we try to get our kitchen done......Cheers from Alberta!

  22. SO worth the wait! And you know what I've seen before with those type of curtains....each one rolled up/down at varying heights. Not sure how it would look from the outside looking in but from what I've seen of pics of the inside looking out...FAB!

  25. How lovely! What a perfect room in which to spend a winter's day. The curtains were certainly worth the wait and the work it took to put them up. I'm glad I popped over from Show and Tell Friday to visit your lovely home this morning.
