Finally Gonna Commit

Monday, November 8, 2010

In case you hadn't noticed by now I am very non-committal (is that even a word?). It takes me f-o-r-e-v-e-r to make a decision on anything house-related because I'm always afraid that I will regret my decision or have to live with something I don't like forever and ever. It's a horrible way to be. Alex doesn't think so. He likes it when I can't decide because it means I don't spend any money. Boys, huh?

I know I've annoyingly mentioned my LOVE for the following Pottery Barn tie-up shades:

I love them. Love, love, love them. Love them so much it hurts. I attempted to make my own knock-off tie-up shade here. It turned out really well, but it wasn't/isn't the real thing. I had to use white canvas instead of white cotton/linen and it just doesn't look as light and breezy. Did you know that Pottery Barn even discontinued these window treatments for awhile? Yup. But now they're back. AND I'M GETTING THEM. Sorry about the capitals. I was shouting it, though.

How am I getting them you ask, when poopy Pottery Barn doesn't ship to Canada? Enter the awesome in-laws who are leaving for Florida in 2 weeks and who gave me their American credit card number. Jackpot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll have the goods shipped to their place and then they are going to ship them up here to me. Soooooo excited!!!

You'll understand my excitement once you see a picture of the sunroom where they are going. When we moved in we had to choose window treatments right away that were ultra-private. The five sunroom windows let anyone on the street see right through our whole main floor: sunroom, living room, dining room, and kitchen. A snoopy neighbour once offered to give us all of the furniture in her basement since our house was "empty." Um, can you please not peek in my house?!? The only suitable thing we could find were 2" faux wood blinds (white) that had to be custom ordered. They were pretty expensive and so Alex wouldn't let me get didn't think we should get anything else.

The windows / blinds are in desperate need of some fabric to soften them up. I've finally convinced Alex that these tie-up shades are the answer and I absolutely can't wait to get them.

I've also decided to order the following rug for under our teeny table in our breakfast room. I'll have to wait until the spring when Alex's parents get back to have it, though. It'd cost too much to get that bulky item shipped to them and then to me. Still exciting, though.

It's kind of fun once you finally make a decision! Have you made any tough decorating decisions lately?

  1. Oh Sarah,
Do I have a tough time making decisions! For some crazy reason it gets tougher and tougher the older you get. When you are younger, you have that "fly by the seat of your pants attitude". . .I lost mine somewhere between 38 and 40ish. But you are correct. . .when I do make decision and especially one that I am 100% sure of, boy am I tickled! Adrenaline rush! Right now I am struggling with what color to paint a buffet that has been sitting in my dining room for over a year. . .glaminacan.blogspot.com. . .
I think your choices will be beautiful. I have a lot of fun following your blog. I really get a lot of inspiration from all of you creative younger chicks!

  3. I like your choices. I think they will look great. The nerve of your neighbor! I have been debating painting a built in hutch since July! I have the paint and everything. I think I am going to do it during my Christmas vacation time.

  4. WHAT?? Pottery Barn doesn't ship to Canada?? What's up with that, I know they have stores in Canada (or at least in Toronto). I really feel for my fellow neighbors to the north.

I too love those shades and have thought about using them in my bedroom. The cotton/linen very lightweight fabric is just not something you can find at a fabric store to make them yourself.

Can't wait to see them in your room, I think they'll look fantastic.

I love the rug too and have been eyeing ot for a while, but I hate rug decisions for the same reasons you mentioned!! One day!! :)

  6. I am extremely indecisive as well and I have a tendency to dislike whatever I have chosen as soon as it is finished! I love those shades though and can't wait to see them in your room!

I too get annoyed that my favorite stores won't ship to Canada, luckily we live 20 minutes from the border, so we now have a PO box in the US...is that an option for you?

  7. I have the same problem. I'm getting better but still kick myself for missing out on stuff when I can't make a decision. I think they will look great in the sunroom. I'd hang em high! lol, I love the rug too. I can't believe they don't ship to Canada!

  8. So are you going to ditch the faux wood blinds and replacing them with the tie up shades or are you using both of them together? If you are using the tie up shades alone, won't there still be a privacy problem when they are tied up? I've been wanting those tie up shades for my dining room, but if they're tied up, then my neighbors can view us eating so I just can't figure out what to do about that.

  9. Jen,

I've never heard of the getting your own US P.O.Box before but it is something I would consider since I've been ordering alot of fabric and things from the States. Thanks for the suggestion. Although we're quite a few hours away so I'm not sure how that would work?

    Anonymous,

I am going to keep the wood blinds for privacy and mount the tie-up shades over them.... a few inches higher than the window trim so that it softens up the harsh lines that the horizontal blinds create. I'll also mount them high so that I can roll them right up to get alot of light. I still want to be able to cover the top of the blinds though because the hardware is kind of ugly. I'm crossing my fingers that it will look good. :)

  10. Google the town in the US that you cross into and search for something like this: www.packageexpress.com. It is a store that you can ship all your packages to and the hold them until you pick them up. They charge a few dollars per package, but they are very professional and email you reminders when your packages arrive which is nice. We have two of these in the tiny border town that we cross into so hopefully yours has something similar. We are looking into an actual PO box as well...I have several friends who have gone that route. Good luck!
