The Longest Window Box Ever

Saturday, July 10, 2010

Last spring I asked Alex if he could make me a window box. He said yes! Then I told him I wanted it to be 12 feet long. Oh, the look on his face was priceless. Everyone that heard about this "12-foot window box" thought it was a ridiculous idea. Family, friends, even the workers at the hardware store thought I was crazy and that it would look silly.

I went to Evans Lumber and chose the trim I wanted for the top and bottom. Alex bought all the supplies and then went to town. He actually built the window box in the second story bedroom as his saws and tools were in there already. When he was done building it, we had to lift it out the second-story window and down into the front yard. That was interesting.

Now that it's installed I'm fairly certain that all those non-believers would change their minds.

Here's a cute story. I took Roary for a walk down the street one day, and met a neighbour who had recently moved in on our street. He was ripping out all of the overgrown greenery in his front yard. A different neighbour came over to chat and suggested to him that he put a window box on his newly exposed front window. She recommended that he go and look at the house down the street that has a huge white window box running under all the front windows. That was me! She was talking about my house and my window box. I was secretly giddy inside. Hee hee.

The flowers I chose and planted aren't as big and poofy as I imagined, but there's still a lot more summer for them to fill out a bit. Hopefully!

There are two more sets of windows that could potentially receive the window box treatment. What do you think? Two more???

  2. It's so pretty! I think it is a beautiful feature! That's so cool that you heard them talking about your window box. Ha ha to all those nay-sayers. You should take a photo of it in to the hardware store next time you go (which will probably be tomorrow, right?) You are lucky to be married to such a handy guy...Dimitri can barely pound in a nail..sigh...

  8. I love your window box, turned out great. It's nice when an idea becomes reality, and it's fantastic! I'm glad you didn't listen to the majority and went with it anyway.

    1. I've always wanted to make two more window boxes for the side of the house but with so many other reno projects on the go it's hard to promise anything right now!

However, if we do ever get that far down our to-do list I will share a tutorial for sure. :)
