Front Entry Update

Thursday, January 17, 2013

Oh how I love when I find the perfect thing. And it totally happened the other night on a way overdue trip to Homesense. I hadn't been shopping there since before Christmas. So yes, I was in withdrawals. Alex took the fam out for a little mini shopping adventure. He's such a keeper, right?

A bench for our front entry has been on my wish list for a few years now. I was looking for something simple and narrow, with the possibility of placing baskets underneath for storage.

{Is there such thing as too many baskets? Ummm, I think not.}

I find that some pieces of "wood" furniture from Homesense are really solid and well-built while others are a bit flimsy or have cheap finishes.

The bench that I found the other night is nice and solid, a lovely shade of blue-grey, and looks just like this Pottery Barn bench that I've been ogling for centuries:

The best part about the whole thing is that the Pottery Barn bench (above) is listed online for $297 and I got mine for $69. But not really, because I had a $50 gift card from taking pictures (woot woot!) so really it only cost me $20.

Squeal! I'm pretty sure that squealing is kind of unbecoming. But I'm doing it anyway.

I found the perfect storage baskets to go underneath on a quick trip to Michael's. I made sure to take some measurements with me to make sure the baskets would fit. I'm glad I did because when I was in the store I could have sworn the large size baskets would fit. But once I measured I realized that I needed the medium-sized ones instead. I was planning to do the awkward go in the store twice with two different 40% off coupons. However, their whole basket section was 40% off that day. Score!

I am LOVING how this little spot is coming along. I really want to start using the front door more often. It's so pretty in this entry compared to our ugly, cramped, add-on side entry that still has carpeting and smells like wet dog. Ugh.

Aside from the bench and baskets, everything else we already had. :)

Bench - Homesense
Baskets - Michael's
Lantern - Homesense
Pail - Local Home Décor Store
Plant - Home Depot
Mirror - DIY Project

What are you up to today? Coops and I are totally going to hibernate. It's -35 degrees Celsius here today! My plan is to make some fresh bread and roasted red pepper soup, put the Christmas decorations away, have two cups of coffee, research vacations, cancel our cable, play with Mini-Coop, and clean the house for a little baby play date tomorrow. I'll probably only get one of those things done though. Ain't that the way it goes....... :)

  1. I just adore your entry! Wonderful clean and simple design. Where did you get your Peaches wood sign? I've been on the search for fun farm signs. As for today's plans, well it's crazy cold here today too so I'm thinking it's a great day to stay inside and maybe organize a closet or two! :-)

    1. Hey Carly!

I got the Peaches sign from a vendor (can't remember which one?!?) at the Christie Antique show in Hamilton a few years ago.

Even though it was a bit overpriced I knew I had to get it. That's been Al's nickname for me for the longest time.

      :)

I think I do too. The color is a bit more subtle. And it was way cheaper. :)

  6. Love the bench and it sure looks like the one from PB. Great price. I like how it looks with the slate floors.
Canceling your cable. I would love to do that. We wouldbe so lost. But that is one bill that I think is way too over priced. Good for you.

    1. We don't regret cancelling the cable one little bit. We have a few other ways that we can watch our favorite shows. And now we have an extra fifty bucks a month to spend on trinkets! Don't tell Alex. ;)

  9. No Homesense since Christmas! Wow that takes willpower! The bench with all the trimmings looks perfect there. Love it. That mirror is beautiful. Was it a window? I love old windows made into things. Great job as always. It is almost time for Cooper picture post, no?

    1. Hey Kelly!

I know, the only reason that I hadn't been to Homesense in so long is because the cold weather has turned me into a hermit. Brrrr it's pretty frigid here right now.

So, yes the mirror was a window. I have a post somewhere with the before and after as well as a tutorial.

I am so overdue with a Coopster update. It's on my list though! :)

    1. Thanks so much Jess! I find that some baskets at Michael's are kind of cheap-y but these were an awesome find. I wish I had a reason to back and get the large and small ones, too.

      :)

      Good luck with your search.

P.S. How is that beautiful baby girl of yours doing?

  11. LOVE! That bench was a serious find, girl! The grey is so pretty with the floors. You gotta love Michael's basket section...I think they are like always 40% off:) Man, if you somehow managed to accomplish that whole list of things to do today with a baby...I would faint. Are you thinking of taking the Coopster on said vacation or is it just the two of you? Have fun on your play date tomorrow! Play dates and family coming over to babysit are probably the only reason why I ever actually clean my house! Without those as deadlines/motivators, I would be screwed:)

    1. I know!!! Everything at Michael's is on sale so often that if I ever have to pay regular price I pretty much die inside. Hahaha.

Okay, so that list that I wanted to accomplish in one day was a total pipe dream and the baby was cranky and teething so I don't even think I got one thing done! Next time I will stick to one or two goals for the day. Hee hee.

So, we are thinking of a vacation with all three of us! We just applied for the baby's passport and we need to find some dog sitters. We are thinking maybe Florida since we have some family there right now.

Sometimes I think we might be the same person because I JUST said to my girlfriend when she was over last week that the only time my house gets clean is when I invite people over. So, really I should be inviting people over every week.

      :)

  17. oh my gosh, I love it!!!! So beautiful! Came across your blog last week and have been reading old posts trying to get all caught up. I've been trying to figure out if you live in Canada or the US? I'm in Montreal and from some of the things you've posted (stores you shop at, etc.,) I feel like you live in Ontario....

    1. Hey Amanda!

You are right, I'm in Ontario! We took a trip to Montreal the summer before last and it was so much fun. We only wish we had spent a few more days. Oh well, we'll have to make another trip sometime.

I'm so glad you found the blog. It's nice to "meet" you. :)

  19. I love the Goldilocks comment above because it's so true! (Even if your locks aren't golden anymore).

Your find was definitely worth the wait because it looks like it was made for that space. It completes the vignette so nicely. Even the plants in your house are cute!

I used to make my hubby do the second coupon trick with me all the time ;) Bonus tip - don't forget about the 15% Michaels discount for teachers everyday. Anything that's already on sale (as long as it's not a clearance sale) is supposed to have an additional 15% off, and anything regular price is always 15%. You just need to show an OCT card or something similar.

I wish I was doing fun things tomorrow but it's a report card writing day for my board. Yuck. I bet you don't miss that at all!!!

    1. CLAIRE!

I did NOT know the teacher discount thing. I will have to look into that. I'm pretty sure that gives me another excuse to shop. Heh heh heh.

Oh I feel so bad that you have to write report cards. Even just writing the words just gave me a little uncomfortable shiver. That is one thing that I absolutely dread. So no, I am not missing them right now. Although I really shouldn't rub it in.

      :)
      Thanks for the sweet comments!!!

I never usually look at Michaels either since Homesense usually has a better selection. But for some reason my local Homesense has been slacking in the basket department lately. I should write a letter. I love my baskets.

      Heh heh heh. :)

  32. I just found your blog. I love it! I just started blogging myself a month or so ago. I'm planning on making a growth chart for my little guy. He turns 1 year old on February 21st! I was searching for DIY growth chart ideas and came across yours. I love it. I might copy it :) My hubbie and I went and bought a piece of wood yesterday. I will post a photo of mine on my blog (www.lifeaswegoit.com) when I'm done with it! Thanks for the fab idea. I look forward to seeing more.

    1. Hi Steph!

I can't find any info on the bench itself.... it was one of those great Homesense finds.

I did a quick look and it is very similar to this bench from Wayfair.ca:

      https://www.wayfair.ca/J.-Hunt-Home-Kidss-Farmhouse-Wood-Kitchen-Bench-FR1751-FR1752-HUNT1367.html

      I hope that helps! :)
