DIY Butterfly Collage Wall Art

Friday, August 13, 2010

As soon as I saw images of their 3-d Butterfly Collages at Sixty-Fifth Avenue and The Year of Story I was in love and just knew I had to try and make my own. Well, not really my own. I made this one for a friend's baby shower that is coming up! I'm pretty sure she doesn't read this blog (yet, heh heh) so it should be safe to post it.

I seriously love this project so much that I think I'm going to tweak it a bit and create something similar for our own nursery. Everyone (including myself) is certain that we will receive a referral for a little boy so I'll have to switch up the butterflies with cars, airplanes, or even little fish. Oh, the possibilities!

So I headed to Michaels yesterday loaded up with dorky coupons and a giftcard from my birthday. I purchased:

- a large, white 11 x 14 frame (40% off plus 25% off)
- a large, white double matte (40% off)
- a Martha Stewart butterfly craft punch (40% off)
- a package of adhesive dots
- multiple sheets of pretty scrapbook paper

Pretty scrapbook paper.
Little foam dots to make the butterflies 3-d.

Martha Stewart's butterfly craft punch. My new best-friend.

After fiddling for an hour and figuring out I needed 35 butterflies, I created a grid in Word
(only took 4 tries) and found a layout that I liked before committing with adhesive.

I held the background up to the grid in front of a sunny window
and marked a tiny green dot where each butterfly would go.

Decisions, decisions. Leave the wings flat or bend the wings up?

I decided to leave them flat. Gotta be a bit different. ;)
How pretty are these paper butterflies?!?
My favourite one.

All framed, windexed, and finished!

The double matte created enough depth for the 3-d butterflies to fit underneath the glass.

Oops. Did I accidentally hang that up on my own wall?

P.S. Thank you so much to the aforementioned bloggers who tackled this project before me and gave me the inspiration.

P.S.S. Now I have to go and clean my entire house. Why is it that every time I start a new project it's like an explosion goes off in every room? I have "practice" butterflies all over the dining room floor, dirty dishes in the sink from yesterday, and coffee mugs everywhere! Help!

P.S.S.S.
I'm heading out for a girl's weekend in Toronto tomorrow a.m. Maybe I can convince the girls to go to some fun furniture/decor stores while we're there. Fingers crossed!

  14. This is sooooo cute! We are getting ready to move into a new home (our first home purchase actually) and my little girl has picked out the biggest room (besides the master) as hers. She has butterfly bedding and I will need more wall decor so this gives me a great idea! Thanks sooo much!

  19. Love this! I have seen a couple of these recently and bought a couple frames to try it! I can't wait! Thanks for sharing yours! Super cute! PS - I totally know what you mean about having to clean the house! Sometimes I turn into this crazy person that forgets about everything else when I'm working on a project. It will come to Monday morning and my husband asks, "Do I have any clean socks?"

    :)

    Thanks again for sharing!

Please email to Haydee8995@yahoo.com. Thank you in advance.
