Grown-Up-Wardrobe Update

Friday, October 19, 2012

Hiya.

Justsoyouknow this post is going to be tres weird. That's french for very weird and completely out of the ordinary for me.

It felt so strange taking pictures of clothes this morning but I thought that I would shock you by actually following up on one of my previous posts.

You know, the post where I admitted that I live in graphic tees, skate shoes, hoodies, and pigtails.

That post was called My Wardrobe Needs a Grown-Uppity Update and it's true. It does.

If you've signed on to read this blog for decorating and DIY tips and inspiration (that has been lacking lately, yes I've noticed), and don't really care about my new purse, please skip this post but come back later, m'kay? M'kay.

So, awhile back I pinned a trillion few pictures on one of my Pinterest boards called Ca-ute Outfits:

Oooooh, scarves. Ooooooh purses.

I was psyching myself up to go shopping for a few items to ease into the whole dressing like a grown up thing.

What ended up working for me (so that I didn't run home crying) was going to all the same stores, but choosing items that I wouldn't normally pick. I couldn't have done it without my friend Jeni-Beni. She is so patient and hasn't even made fun of the fact that I haven't worn the skinny jeans yet.

Yup, you heard right, skinny jeans

:o

I didn't go super crazy or anything ('member how I'm on mat leave trying to save money so I never have to work again???) but I did get a few items.

I totally feel like an over-sharer but here are a few things that I got:

Skinny Jeans - American Eagle

Girls, those jeans are skinny. S-k-i-n-n-y. I haven't worn them yet. I'm practicing in my mind first.

Flats - Spring Shoes

Grey flats with a bow. Because I can still look cute, right? I am all about the grey lately.

Flats - Winners

Brown flats with buckles. Whoa Nelly I'm on a whole new playing field with those buckles.

Boots - Boathouse

Boots. They're grey. They're fluffy. They have buttons. And they can be worn over those skinny jeans. Maybe distract from them a little bit, too. ;)

Scarves - American Eagle (left), Winners (right)
Some grown-up scarves that aren't for winter and aren't made of wool.

Necklaces - American Eagle
Five, yes FIVE new necklaces. As mentioned before, I had been wearing the same heart necklace for the past five years. No word of a lie.

Jacket - Old Navy

A military-style jacket with a cinched waist. Is "cinched waist" a thing? I think it's a thing.

Purse - Winners

A charcoal purse with pockets and buckles. I had to force myself to buy it but now I love it.

A few other things I picked up (but aren't pictured) were a few plain coloured tees (white, pink, navy blue), a grey cardigan, and a grey sweater.

I will totally understand if you are suddenly intimidated by my new fashionista-ness. Bahahaha. Kidding of course.

Cooper and I went on our first movie date yesterday (that stars and strollers thing is awesome, right?) and I totally rocked the flats, the sweater, the purse, and the scarf.

(I did wear pigtails though. Some things you can never change.)
(And by "rocked it" I really mean "felt awkward".)

P.S. We saw this movie and LOVED it:

So that's the update about the clothes stuff. How is your wardrobe looking these days? Sweats? Spandex? Heels? Fishing boots? Evening gowns? Hey, I won't judge.

:)

  1. Mine's in terrible shape, but that's because my clothing budget is zero. Zilch. Cannot buy anything until the money tree blossoms, which won't happen anytime soon.

I'm wearing ten year old shoes. Hope they last forever!

  2. Well I hope two things. 1) That your 10-year-old shoes are at least cute and 2) That your money tree blossoms soon.

  3. Cute choices! I especially want those scarves!
I'm in the same boat as you, trying to grow things up a bit. I also bought skinny jeans after SWEARING I hated them and would never wear them. Then I bought fancy pants boots (With heels of all things) to wear with the jeans. And then I actually wore them. And kinda liked it ; )

    1. Thanks Meghan!

I also SWORE that I would NEVER EVER wear skinnies. I've always been and deep down will always be a wide-leg, bell-bottomy girl.

You are one step ahead of me with the heels though. I'm not there yet but I'm sure you rocked them.

      :)

  7. Those winners shoes with multiple buckles are AMAZING!! Great work what-not-to-wear-ing yourself. It's like you had someone saying "buy that purse" with you! And glad to hear a good review for that movie, it looks great!

    1. Thanks Heather!!!

I haven't worn those shoes with buckles yet because I think I might need a brown grown-up purse to go with 'em. Heh heh heh. But I agree they are very cute.

You really have to see that movie it was kind of mesmerizing. Although it could have been the fact that I haven't been to the movies in six months!

      Haha!

  9. We have the same boots!! Got them at a discount store here and I've never seen them on anyone else. I really like them by the way. I have a pair of skinnies but they just aren't as comfortable so I only wear them for evenings out and stuff like that. Because I have so many evenings out.

Since having two kids I have done a lot of Target shopping for clothes. My wardrobe is plain t-shirt, jeans, and statement necklace. That is my formula. :)

I so need new clothes but my desires for drapes and some day a new couch just seem to get in the way. :)

You look really cute by the way!!!!!

    1. Thanks so much Erin!!!!

I like your formula. Still casual but a funky necklace thrown in to make it fancier.

I'm still getting used to the whole necklace/scarf thing but I think it's just hard to get out of my boring comfort zone.

Love that you have the same boots. I'm in all kinds of love with mine. :)

  10. Funny timing - we just got back from clothes shopping for me. I just went from "Corporate Toronto" outfits (where I totally loved-loved-loved my 10+ black dresses, and another 10+ non black dresses - oh how I wish I was kidding! all my pretty-pretty dresses.), to "let's do nothing and travel/hike for 3 months" clothes. Which are totally awesome! And casual! And I'm so lucky! Except 90% of my work clothes are back in Toronto and monday I'm starting in a small tech-y company here in Wales. So - need "in between" clothes. Eesh, if I'm confusing you that's good cause I'm confused myself. My wardrobe too.

But in good news I have a pair of boots which will magically make it ALL fine, right? :)

    1. Olya! I'm loving your pictures on Instagram. Of course I am also very jealous of your amazing travels and your awesome photography.

I think boots will make it allllllll good. I am too scared to wear mine because they are so cute I don't want to get them dirty..... :)

  13. I've been slightly obsessed with clothing on Pinterest as of late too and can really relate to what you're going through. I just started homeschooling my girls and with one less income I've been trying to pinch pennies, but I SO need a wardrobe update! I love what you bought and think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and pick up some new things as well. Moms are important too, right?!
    Thanks for sharing!
