Closet Organization That Didn't Take 3 Hours I Swear

Sunday, January 30, 2011

Wellllll, my weekend project list was kind of long. I suppose it was unrealistic to think that someone with project ADD could start and finish all of them in two very short days.

The good news is that I did finish a project that has been on my to-do list since before Christmas. My closet.

I mentioned in my last post that I had piles and baskets of clean clothes everywhere and that instead of putting them away I've been rummaging through them (and making a giant mess) for months.

So here is the dreaded before shot. Please don't judge me. I like to paint stuff and read blogs instead of fulfilling my domestic duties.

Why fold your clean clothes when you can just jam them into various baskets and hampers?

Annnnnnd that's why I've been avoiding this project for the last 8 weeks. Ba-rutal. The sad part about it was that most of those clothes were at some point folded. Until I flung them around in a whirlwind trying to get out of the house in time for work. New Years Resolution #34: Don't hit the snooze button 10 times every morning and then rush around late for work.

Important Organization Tip: While you're dilly dallying around almost in slow-motion efficiently organizing your clothes, set up your laptop and watch three episodes of 90210 all the while drinking an ice-cold pepsi. It will make putting your clothes away somewhat bearable.

Three hours later:

Dreamy, isn't it? The brilliant part about the whole thing is that I found multiple clothing items that I completely forgot I had. On the downside, I found several items that I don't fit into anymore (boooo). I also made a giant pile of clothes that I never wear because of whatever reason (missing a button, shrunk in dryer, ugly-what-was-I-thinking, etc.).

I used my little hanger-thingy from Homesense to store all of my pants. I'm a visual person. If I stick them in a dresser I'll forget all about them. I have them sorted into jeans, khakis, and dress pants. I got rid of a whole bunch that were getting tight old. I may have to go shopping for some more work pants. Hanging up I have dresses on the left and blouses on the right.

On the other side of the closet I have another one of those hangy-things but this one is supposed to be for shoes. I use it to store all of my tank tops and t-shirts. Yeah, I'm a t-shirt, jeans, and sneaker kinda girl.

On the top shelf I've got all of my sweaters and cardigans. On the lower shelf I've got my hoodies. Other girls collect shoes or purses, I'm all about the hoodies.

Down below I use three wire baskets to store some frequently used items: work-out gear (I went on the elliptical twice last week and it almost killed me), comfy joggers to throw on after work, and some slippers and my collection of knitted socks (I'm pretty sure my mom puts a pair in my stocking every year).

On the right hand side, I've got four small hooks to hang some belts. I don't know why I have any since I never wear them. I prefer the plumber's butt look most of the time.

On the left hand side I've got three hooks that are..... empty! Oh the possibilities.......

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And so that ends this installment of share-your-embarrasingly-disorganized-closet-on-the-internet. I thought I'd clear up a few things before I sign off.

If you're wondering where Alex keeps his clothes, he's got an identical closet right next to mine. Very unusual for an older house but I love it. Obviously.

If you're wondering why I have no closet door, it's because the old one was another louvered bi-fold door and we need to custom order a new 5-panel bi-fold door that will match the ones downstairs. It's on the list.

If you're wondering why I have curtain rods but no curtains it's because I shopped the house for one of my "photo shoots" and put the curtains that were in here in the living room.

Oh yeah, and if you want to leave me a comment telling me that you have a closet that looks just like mine did, it would really make me feel better about myself. ;)

  1. FANTASTIC. not very many people are brave enough to show their closets, notice that? I just got shelves in my closet for my shoes on Thursday and I am soooo happy. Still, not sure I could show it to the world. Great job!

  4. I totally have a disorganized closet. I organized it a few months back but it's back to its messy state. Don't feel bad, you're not alone! Also, I live out of my laundry basket too - I HATE putting away laundry!!!

  5. I'm raising my hand here:) right now my closet looks like yours did, I've been in the process of cleaning it out for about 3 weeks now, I did take a bag of clothes to GW today thought so that makes me feel better. I got some great ideas from yours, I have one of those thingys that you have your jeans in(I have purses in mine) looks like I'll be doing the jeans now. BTW I got mine at a yardsale brandnew! Where did you get the wire baskets? Love them and they look big enought to hold alot!

  6. I have a closet that looks just like yours did - only a bit bigger and with two peoples clothes/shoes/misc. junk. I have doors to close on it though, so it's not likely to get organized very soon!

It looks very nice though! I'll bet you will be able to get ready faster when you do hit the snooze!

  7. nice work! now perhaps you can do mine? I will freely admit that my closet was *almost* that bad before christmas except I don't own that many hampers, so I had various piles inside the closet itself or on the floor beside it. It was awful. I also have a very bad habit of throwing clothes over the bar where other clothes are hanging...

Lucky Alex to have his own closet - Darryl has a dresser on the other side of the room because the closet is mine. aaaaaaall mine. :)

I ALSO have a hoodie addiction that I am imposing on Owen too...you should see how many hoodies that kid owns...

  8. Hehe, just stopping by to stalk and saw your new closet :) I love the cute little baskets on the bottom! Oh and don't feel bad, I'm the same way w/ laundry, it gets pulled out of the dryer (most days) and then piled in baskets. We wear what we find as is LOL I'll fold sometimes. I have a million tiny toddler clothes too - totally not fun to fold! Enjoy the organization <3

  9. Well, you know my closet looked...well, worse, but only because it is bigger, and therefore accomodates more mess. Mine, like yours, was all clean, folded clothes at one time. But, same as you, I would search high and low for a certain item, tossing the others aside while rushing to work...then it's just a mess!!!! I have not even taken a before shot...it's far too bad! But trust me, it was worse than yours. I am NEARLY done mine, but decided to work on the craft room instead today. Maybe next week, I'll finish!!! Maybe....

  14. Yes! yes, my closet did look just like yours until I recently went through the same process (uh, except it took me like 3 weeks). I love your use of the baskets on the floor--that is great b/c they keep it neat but in sight.

  16. What a great idea to use the hanging shelves for shirts and pants...I've only used those for shoes! But if you're without a dresser this is a great solution!

  23. Um, been working on my closet, too. Should have done the before pic, I guess. And...I spent most of Friday morning and afternoon sorting clothes so I can actually hang things without the hangers overlapping. So I got about 1/2 way through clothes organization (and this is after a couple of purging episodes in the fall). Then there is the shelves of gift boxes/wrapping/etc., the cat litter supplies, my overflowing receipt box of mostly receipts so old they really could be recycled now. Um, and a few other things. It's a big walk-in space...which offers great storage, but also many ways of stuffing things in there "out of sight"...

  24. Looks great! You want to come and do mine next? :) I really hate cleaning closets, but I would agree a ice cold Pepsi does help!

  25. You are indeed a brave soul. Having just tackled the very same project this past fall (I, however, did not have three unused hooks), I can honestly say that I don't know why it took me so long to get that project done. Doesn't it feel SO MUCH BETTER getting dressed every day?

  26. Closet looks amazing. The thing that I neglect is mopping the floors. Our whole house is hardwoods and I would rather be blogging/visiting blogland. There's nothing wrong with what we're doing. Right?

  28. You did a great job with your closet! I just cleaned out and organized mine last week. I think there's something about a new year that makes us want to clear out the junk. Thanks for the peek inside your closet. If you get a chance to visit my blog you can see inside mine too.

  29. Im sorry to tell you but my closet is worse than yours was. I have ten years of what the heck do I do with this "stuff" stuck in there. We are VERY short on closet space and my master closet is the largest one in the house, actually besides the tiny ones in the boys rooms its the only one in the house. So everything gets put there. I'm with you I'm too busy painting, sewing, gluing, reading blogs to worry about the closet until its time to get dressed. Then I'm stressed to the max. Loving your style and your blog, meet your new follower, :)

My closet is almost exactly alike... Except mine is a hot mess of organization! So thank you for sharing your closet and the great ideas for organizing it, mind if I ask where you got the wired box thing at the very bottom of your closet? They're cute!
