Hello New Year, and Goodbye White Couches

Sunday, January 1, 2017

So. Let's all pretend that it's only been a week (and not an entire year) since I last posted. It's not like you missed much - basically we're still working on all of the projects that we were last year at this time. Let's not focus on the whys. Let's focus on some random positives, m'kay?

Positive #1.

I went back to work in September but I'M STILL ON HOLIDAYS FOR ANOTHER WEEK. I'm sorry for shouting but I'm very excited about it. I will drink all the coffee and wear all the pajamas and tell the kids to play with their toys from Santa instead of putting plastic cellophane on their heads and playing ghosts. Why?!? Why?!?!?!?!?

Positive #2.

We made some progress on our ugly side entryway this weekend. We sanded, caulked, primed, and painted a lot of trim. It was the most boring project of all time but we muscled through and got it done. Finally! My last post about it was in December of 2015!!!!!

Positive #3.

I have eight more days to eat glorious, unhealthy food (mmm cheese, I love you chocolate, two heaping teaspoons of brown sugar in my coffee you are my BFF) before I am back on the kale-eating-wagon.

Back to the couches. We have had white, slip-covered Ikea couches for eons. I loved them. I raved about them. I washed them a lot. After something like twelve years, I gave up. My two ninja-like children seemed to find any and every way to get their grubby peanut butter fingers on them whenever I wasn't looking. It just became too. much. work. to keep them clean. About a month ago, my world was turned upside down. We ordered light beige slipcovers from Ikea.

Light beige. So weird. Here is a picture of the cover from the Ikea website. They are the Ektorp sofa covers and the colour is called Lofallet Beige.

They are really nice. I'm still getting used to them though! And I want to shout from the rooftops that the few marks and stains that the covers have acquired since we got them (those children again, ahem) have come clean with a baby wipe.

I'd love to take some pictures of the new couch covers but we've got a bit of a Christmas explosion to deal with first. Maybe next week when I'm on holidays I can clean it all up? Bahahahahaha. That was funny.

By the way, how've you been?

  1. Arugh, I am so over my white Ektorps too! They show EVERY LITTLE STAIN. I hate that it takes a whole day to wash and dry them, if the weather cooperates. And it is like a full on workout trying to get all the covers back on. I thought about getting the same covers! Can't wait to see how you go with the new ones. :) Julie

    1. I would actually set my Fitbit to track my exercise when I put those slipcovers back on. LOL! Such a workout! I would go for the covers. They are SO worth it, and the colour is really nice! I just have to repaint now, don't tell the hubs. ;)

  3. Hey giiiiiiirl! Nice to see you again!I hope back to work goes great for you!I don't blame you a bit for changing out those slip covers. I have a white one in my living room and my kids don't go in there, but my cat does and it gets so much hair on it!

    1. Hey Lisa!!!! Thanks so much for commenting!!! Back to work is pretty much crazy town. :S BUT, I'm only half-time so I can't complain. I was supposed to be working half-time so that I could spend time with the littles and keep up with housework but for some reason I'm only able to spend time with the kids. No housework, LOL!

  5. I'm saving up to get this couch and because I've heard a lot of people complain about the white showing so much, we are going to go with the grey slipcover. My goal is to get the new couch by the end of the year. We have a regular slipcover over a brown couch now and I am so over having to tuck it in constantly!

    1. I totally agree about Instagram. It's so easy to scroll and like. Especially when the littles wake me up in the middle of the night and then I can't get back to sleep. Hee hee.

  10. So glad you're back. I missed your posts. Last year's to do list is still there for this year for me too! I have the same sofa but with a washed grey cover which I love. My kidaloops are 5 and 7 and I can say that it does get better on the cleaning front. Although as I search for the remote under the sofa cushion amongst a lot of kid debris, I must say its a slow improvement. ☺ Donna from Australia

  11. I was shocked that it was YOU that popped up in my feed. Hey, at least you know what is TRULY important in life. You are a fun read even with no major projects. :) Look forward to seeing a bit of the projects you have completed but I understand--you are a busy mama!

  12. OMG I just posted a question on your IG feed about wether you had gotten a new slipcover and what color it was!! Too funny!!! I was asking because I actually bought the light beige one probably 4 months ago to replace my white ones for the same reason. I have 2 boys ages 13 and 11 and they still get it filthy as soon as I wash it. Problem is though is that the new slipcover is still in the box in my closet. I can't seem to bring myself to change the white out. I do so love the white but they do show everything and I spend a lot of time either washing them or keeping covers on them to keep from having to wash them and try to keep from getting dirty so fast. Soooo...I would love to know your thoughts on this color and how it's working out for you!?!? I was wondering the same thing about my gray walls...would I have to change the color!??!! Excited to hear back from you. Also, I love your blog and your posts as you are so REAL and down to earth. Hope to hear more from you in 2017!! You are always a big inspiration to me and my decorating!!! Thanks!!

    1. So, I'm not going to lie, it's taking me awhile to get used to the couch covers. BUT, I do find that the color is a nice, light oatmealish color that is nice and neutral. I stole some plain, white linen cushions from my basement and I like how it looks. It sort of ties in the rest of the white furniture in the house. I would have to say I am 100% happy with the covers so far. They are still a light enough color to work with my decor. They hide dust, marks, and scuffs unlike the white ones. The only thing about my wall color is that it is a light grey but has a blue undertone to it. To anyone else I think the colors would be fine together but because I've had this color for four years I think I just need a change. :) I hope that helps!!! Let me know if you have any more questions for me. I'm hoping to take some updated pictures but I need to tame the toys first. Ahhhhhhh!!!!!!

  13. I feel like we are in the same stages of life, and my blogging took the same break. Oh, how I loved blogging! Maybe we'll both be back on the blogging bandwagon. My friend got the Ikea couches with those same slipcovers, and I was in love. Sometimes I wish mine were white, but I'd have to wash them ALL.THE.TIME. with my two {three years & 10 months}. Anyhow, look forward to your possible blogging to be back! Maybe we both will!

    1. Oh, how I feel ya. I hope you were able to write your first post. I am once again caught in the whirlwind that is working / small children / never-ending housework. I'm so hoping to be a bit more regular with posting but I'm finding it nearly impossible these days. :)
